Paediatrics Foot Doctor

Paediatrics is a specialist area, which concentrates on treating children. This is often a challenging area within, as children should not be considered as a "mini adult". As a child grows, their gait changes dramatically over the first 6 years of their life. Our paediatric specialist's role extends from the realms of a purely biomechanical process, to that of a broader medical knowledge and a sound understanding of the psychological impacts of dealing with children.

Children with flat feet and low arches may not be able to keep up with other children because of the strain that is added to their feet and legs. As a child masters walking, the inner arch of the foot begins to appear. All toddlers have flat feet, but by 5 to 6 years this arch becomes apparent and by around 6 years of age, your child should have normal arches in both feet.

It has been our experience that proper care and treatment of the feet, beginning in childhood will prevent many of the mechanical and orthopaedic problems seen in adults. Many children walk excessively pigeon-toed, flat footed, or bowlegged and although they may not be in pain, problems can arise in the future. Many babies naturally appear flatfooted, but as the baby begins to stand and walk this will disappear. If you have any concerns about your child's feet, you can call to discuss this with our specialist orthotist before booking an appointment.
