Knee pain

Knee pain is a common complaint in runners and we see a lot of new runners who started out a bit too enthusiastically! Problems can also arise with hill running or towards the end of marathon training. The knee can also be affected by what is going on at the hip and foot.

A physiotherapy assessment will look at your whole lower limb and gait to establish what is causing your knee pain. There is often weakness or delayed firing of the gluts (buttock muscles), which will be addressed with exercises. A tilted knee cap can be treated with soft tissue release, mobilisations and taping. If a biomechanical issue around the foot is identified, you may be referred for gait analysis. You will also receive advice on your training plan, warm up and stretches to help prevent any future issues.

After just one session of physiotherapy Karen was pain free and successfully ran her 10K with no pain. Well done Karen!
"I was training for a 10k run and experienced sharp knee pain. Vicki assessed my problem, applied strapping and gave me some simple exercises to correct and help realign my knee cap. After just one treatment I experienced no more knee pain while running or locking of my knee while standing. I was then able to continue training and ran an excellent race. Thanks very much for your expert advice and treatment Vicki."
